Rights & Risk Review

About

Curator’s role

  • Preliminary review. We advise curators embarking on the development of a digital collection to conduct a preliminary review of the copyright status of potential items at the earliest stage. This foresight is essential in the planning phase where curators compile a list of items for digitization and inclusion in the online repository.
  • Multi-repository collections. In scenarios where the digital collection encompasses items from various repositories, we encourage curators to undertake the initiative to engage with corresponding curators from those institutions. The objective is to inform them about the digital collection project and to explore their interest in including their items. Curators should initiate these discussions promptly, setting a precedent for the project’s progression.

Our role

  • Item-level legal review. As the project advances, curators will liaise with our team to assemble a detailed spreadsheet cataloging the chosen items. We will then conduct an item-level review to ascertain the copyright status of each piece. Subsequent to this review, we make informed decisions regarding the eligibility of items for the online collection based on their copyright standing, in consultation with legal counsel.
